Hi Baofener, if you’re a Baofeng UV-82 user, like I hope you are, you know how frustrating it can be when your radio doesn’t work properly.
Whether it’s poor transmission or reception, a keypad that won’t respond, or distorted audio, these issues can make it difficult to communicate with others. In this article, we’ll take a look at some common issues with the Baofeng UV-82 and provide troubleshooting tips to help you get your radio back up and running.
The troubleshooting process for Baofeng radios is more or less the same for all models.
In this post we are going to list the most recurring problems and solutions for the UV-82 model before you throw it through the window.
Baofeng UV-82 Troubleshooting
The following list includes the most common issues with the radio and how to fix them.
- Baofeng UV -82 troubleshooting – Battery not holding a charge
One of the most common issues with the Baofeng UV-82 is a battery that won’t hold a charge. This can be caused by a number of factors, such as using a low-quality or damaged battery, or not properly charging the battery. To troubleshoot this issue, check that the battery is properly installed in the radio, and ensure that it is fully charged before use. Try using a different battery to see if that resolves the issue. If you are using a non-original battery, it may be of lower quality and could be the cause of the problem.
- Baofeng UV -82 troubleshooting – Poor transmission or reception
Another common issue with the Baofeng UV-82 is poor transmission or reception. This can be caused by a variety of factors, such as a faulty antenna or being on the wrong frequency. To troubleshoot this issue, check that the antenna is securely connected to the radio and that it is in good working condition. Ensure that the radio is set to the correct frequency for the desired transmission or reception. Adjust the squelch setting if necessary, it helps to reduce background noise. If you are still experiencing poor transmission or reception, try moving to a different location or contact the manufacturer for further assistance.
- Baofeng UV -82 troubleshooting – Keypad not responding
A non-responsive keypad can be a frustrating issue for Baofeng UV-82 users. This can be caused by a number of factors, such as a malfunctioning keypad or a locked keypad. To troubleshoot this issue, check that the keypad lock is not engaged and try resetting the radio to its factory settings. If the keypad is still not responding, it may be necessary to contact the manufacturer for further assistance.
- – Baofeng UV -82 troubleshooting – Distorted audio
Distorted audio can make it difficult to understand what is being said, and can be caused by a number of factors, such as a faulty speaker or high volume settings. To troubleshoot this issue, check that the speaker connections are secure and that the volume is not set too high. Try to adjust the volume to a comfortable level and see if the distortion is reduced. If the problem persists, contact the manufacturer for further assistance.
- – Baofeng UV -82 troubleshooting – Inability to program channels
Programming channels can be a tricky process, and it’s not uncommon to run into issues. This can be caused by a number of factors, such as using the wrong programming cable or not being in the correct programming mode. To troubleshoot this issue, check that the correct programming cable is being used and ensure that the radio is in the correct programming mode. If you’re still having trouble, consult the user manual or contact the manufacturer for further assistance.
Adjusting the settings on your Baofeng UV-82 can be a confusing and frustrating process, particularly if you’re not familiar with the radio’s menu and settings. To troubleshoot this issue, review the user manual for instructions on how to navigate the radio’s menu and adjust settings. Make sure the radio is in the correct operating mode for the desired settings. If you’re still having trouble, contact the manufacturer for further assistance, good luck with that.
The latter is not a problem in itself but not knowing how to operate the radio may seem like a problem. The different menus of this radio are not easy to understand if one is not used to working with this type of radio.
In summary, the Baofeng UV-82 is a reliable and versatile radio, but like any electronic device, it can experience issues. By understanding the common problems and knowing how to troubleshoot them, you can get your radio back up and running in no time. We know the user manual is not the best and sometimes is very dificult to find the solutions you need.
we always recommend here to try to familiarize yourself with your radio. The continuous use of it will help you to learn more about its operation and, in case of problems, you will be able to find the solution much faster.
Hope this post helped you understand what is involved in the process of troubleshooting your Baofeng UV-82 radio. If what you need to fix on your radio cannot be fixed with the recommendations listed before, please leave a comment or post on our Baofeng User Group.

I am getting reports that after transmitting
When using my Baofeng UV-82 I am getting reports from other listeners during net operations that the audio on my signal fades away almost completely. The fade out begins after only about 30 seconds — not nearly enough transmit time to conduct net operations. I. have tried switching from A to B, changing the antenna, and changing the battery; none of my efforts have given any improvement. Battery is fully charged.
This particular transceiver has worked very well in the past full quieting into the repeater, Simplex operations have also been successful — I cannot identify any changes that would effect my transmissions. Any suggestions on what might be needed?

What a strange problem with your radio. Did you try using an external microphone?
The first thing I would do would be to try with an external microphone and the second thing I would do would be to do a full reset of the radio and test again.
Let me know if it helps.

We have 4 UV-82 radios that we use while conducting trauma medical training for various LE depts. One of the radios is experiencing battery discharge while turned off, the other 3 do not display this issue. The batteries in these radios are stock (came with radio). I have switched the battery out with ones from the other radios, and get the same result….battery in the one radio discharges while off, the other 3 batteries still hold a charge while in the radios and power switched to off. This is proof that the issue is in the radio; not the battery, as the batt still holds a charge when installed in a different radio.
Thoughts?

I use baofeng uv-82 8W, firmware ver.NUV82, my radio emits a short beep when I press PTT. Resetting to FACTORY did not help. Tell me what could be the matter?

2 options, BCL (busy channel lockout) is enabled and other people are talking or you are transmitting out of band and your radio is locked on a frequency range
