Are Baofeng UV-82 waterproof?

In this post, we are going to find out if Baofeng UV-82 are waterproof or not. Keep reading to know more

Many nautical enthusiasts turn to Baofeng UV-82 radios for communication while participating in nautical activities such as boating and sailing. But, as we will discuss in this article, it is important to understand that Baofeng UV-82 radios may not be truly waterproof and may not be suitable for use in nautical activities.

For activities near water, it is best to decide on radios that are under the IP67 or IP68 standard.

First, let’s define what the IP67 standard is. IP stands for “Ingress Protection” and is a rating system used to measure the level of protection against dust and water that a device is designed to have.

The first digit in the IP rating (in this case, 6) represents the level of protection against dust, and the second digit (7) represents the level of protection against water. The higher the number, the better the protection. In the case of IP67, the device is completely protected against dust and can withstand being submerged in water up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes.

It is important to note that Baofeng UV-82 radios are not advertised as having an IP67 rating, this does not necessarily mean that they are not waterproof and able to withstand the nautical activities. Many users have reported that their radios have failed after being submerged in water for even a short period of time.  So it may not be the best choice for activities near water.

Another important factor to consider is that while the radio may be waterproof, the accessories such as the microphone and earpiece may not be. These accessories are often connected to the radio via a cable and if the cable is not waterproof, water can enter the radio through the cable. This is another reason why it is not recommended to submerge the radios for extended periods of time.

It’s important to note that the IP67 rating is a minimum standard, and manufacturers can choose to test their products to a higher standard, which can provide more protection than the minimum requirement.

But, Baofeng UV-82 radios are not tested to any standard, meaning that they are not waterproof.

When it comes to nautical activities, it’s important to choose a device that is truly waterproof and has been tested to a higher standard. This will ensure that the device can withstand being submerged in water for extended periods of time, and will provide reliable communication in case of emergency.

The IP67 standard is a minimum standard for waterproof devices and it’s important to be aware of the limitations of IP67 rating and to be cautious when using these radios near water.

It’s worth mentioning that Baofeng also have other models that are waterproof and suitable for nautical activities such as the Baofeng UV-5RWP and the Baofeng UV-9R. These models are rated to IP67, meaning they are completely waterproof and can withstand being submerged in water up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes.

These models are specifically designed for nautical activities and are a great option for those who are looking for a reliable and durable communication device.

When considering a radio device for nautical activities, it is important to do your research and make sure that the device is truly waterproof. This means not only looking at the IP rating but also reading reviews and understanding the limitations of the device. It is also important to consider the accessories that come with the device and ensure that they are also waterproof.

In summary, Baofeng UV-82 radios are not waterproof and may not be suitable for use in nautical activities without any protection like a bag case.

It is important to understand the limitations of the IP67 rating and to be cautious when using these radios near water. Remember that , Baofeng offers other waterproof models such as:

  • UV-5RWP
  • UV-9R

Those radios area suitable for nautical activities. When considering a communication device for nautical activities, it is important to do your research and choose a device that is truly waterproof and has been tested to a higher standard for better protection and reliable communication.

Some people tested the models that are under the ip67 standard but had issues with water.

My recommendation is that if you are going to do nautical activities, and you are going to choose a Baofeng radio, it is that you bring additional protection like the one I already mentioned.

I hope this post has helped you understand a bit more about whether Baofeng UV-82 are waterproof or not. If you have questions, leave us a comment, or you can ask a question in our Baofeng radio user forum.
